Videotapes, architectural video installations, sound
environments, electronic music performances, flat panel video pieces, and works
for television broadcasts – over 40 years, these are all but a few of the media
that Bill Viola is well known for. Viola is internationally recognised as one
of modern day’s leading artists as he has played a vital role in the
establishment of video and moving image in contemporary art.
I am inspired by Viola because he finds simple ways to create an environment by linking ideas with images, and then to sound, and then to the attention of the viewers. Viola’s work relates to my project because he focuses on natural human experiences such as birth, the unfolding of consciousness and of course death. Due to their simplicity, Viola’s videos are directed towards the viewers but also allow them to be received in the viewer’s own personal way. Some examples, taken from YouTube, of Viola's work are below.
